The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are set to face Manu Samoa this Friday, August 23, 2024, in the opening match of the rebranded Pacific Nations Cup. The game will take place at the HFC Bank National Stadium in Suva, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 PM local time.

This match is highly anticipated as it marks the beginning of a new format for the Pacific Nations Cup, featuring six teams: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, USA, Canada, and Japan. The tournament will run for five weekends, culminating in a Grand Final in Osaka on September 21, 2024. This year’s competition is seen as a key stepping stone towards the expanded Rugby World Cup 2027.

Fiji’s coach, Vern Cotter, has made significant changes to the squad following their previous performances, including a disappointing loss to Australia A. The Fijians are expected to rely on the leadership of captain Waisea Nayacalevu and the dynamism of players like Jiuta Wainiqolo and Ben Volavola. Meanwhile, Samoa, under the leadership of new coach Mahonri Schwalger, is also fielding a strong side, making this a crucial match for both teams as they vie for early dominance in the tournament.

This game promises to be a physical and strategic battle, with both teams eager to make a strong start in the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup
