Four Legends Unite to Assist Schwalger's Vision for a New Era in Samoan Rugby

Apia, Samoa – As Manu Samoa prepares for their first international test match of the year against Italy, new head coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger has placed his trust in a coaching staff composed of former legends of the game. Schwalger believes that the unique experiences and deep understanding of Samoan rugby these men possess will be instrumental in steering the team toward success.

Schwalger's coaching staff includes some of the most celebrated names in Manu Samoa history:

  • Tusi Pisi: Known for his tactical brilliance, Pisi is the highest point scorer in Manu Samoa history. His wealth of knowledge as a former fly-half and his experience in both playing and coaching make him a pivotal addition to the team’s offensive strategies.

  • Alesana Tuilagi: As the second top try scorer for Manu Samoa, just behind the legendary Brian Lima, Tuilagi's physicality and finishing skills are unmatched. His experience on the field and his previous coaching roles ensure that the team’s attacking prowess is in capable hands.

  • Census Johnston: A former prop with an illustrious career, Johnston's expertise in the scrum is set to bolster the forward pack’s strength and technique. His coaching experience further solidifies his role in developing the team’s core.

  • Kane Thompson: Known for his leadership and versatility as a lock/back-row, Thompson's impactful career in rugby, coupled with his coaching experience, makes him a vital component in fostering team cohesion and resilience.

Coach Schwalger emphasised the importance of having these legends on the coaching staff. "These men understand the environment that the Manu Samoa players are in, from having limited resources to game day," he explained. "They’ve achieved numerous accolades in the international game and know firsthand what it means to be a Manu Samoa player. Their experience and passion are invaluable."

Schwalger's belief in this homegrown coaching team aligns with his vision of maintaining the cultural and competitive spirit of Samoan rugby. The presence of these legends is not just about experience but also about instilling a sense of pride and heritage in the current squad.

With only a week to assemble the team, Schwalger emphasised the importance of selecting players who are fit and match-ready, highlighting the need for a cohesive and dynamic squad capable of performing under pressure. He also stressed that he wants to bring back the "Samoan style" of play, the flair that Manu Samoa was known for while simultaneously maintaining the depth and speed of todays game but with a bit more power.
