On July 5, 2024, a significant partnership was solidified between the University of Auckland and the National University of Samoa (NUS) to advance Pacific-led research and educational initiatives. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by University of Auckland Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater and NUS Vice-Chancellor Professor Tuifuisa'a Patila Amosa signifies the commitment to establishing solid pathways for Samoan students and fostering enhanced collaboration between the academic communities of both institutions.
The University of Auckland has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Pacific region through a landmark agreement. Its designation as the United Nations hub for Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education further underscores this steadfast dedication. Under this collaboration, NUS's educational programs will undergo accreditation, providing Samoan students the opportunity to pursue higher education at the University of Auckland. Professor Freshwater emphasised the paramount importance of the Pacific to New Zealand and articulated the significance of direct engagements in advancing the mutually shared objectives of both institutions.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific Professor Jemaima Tiatia-Siau and Pacific Portfolio lead Sili-Mireta Ropati attended the signing ceremony, emphasising the potential for improved outcomes through collaborative efforts. This partnership is anticipated to create exceptional opportunities for Samoan youth, augment their educational prospects, and advance the overarching objective of ensuring equitable and high-quality education in the Pacific region.
