Breaking: President Joe Biden has announced the termination of his bid for the presidency, significantly altering the landscape of the Democratic primary race. After weeks of intensifying pressure from within his own party, Joe Biden has pulled the plug on his run for re-election. The president, still recovering from a Covid-19 diagnosis, has remained at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with first lady Jill Biden all weekend.
He asked two of his closest advisers to start the process of drafting the letter and coordinating the announcement on Saturday night, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The decision marks the end of an extensive and illustrious political career for President Joe Biden, who has served as a senator and vice president, and has been a prominent figure in American politics for several decades. While the reasons behind his departure from the race remain unclear, its impact on the Democratic Party is expected to be deeply felt, as the remaining candidates regroup and realign their campaigns in response to this unexpected development.
In a letter published on social media, Biden expressed his belief that stepping down was in the best interest of his party and the nation. He indicated that he would address the nation later in the week, expressing that serving as president had been the greatest honour of his life.
Harris says she will "earn and win" Democratic nomination
Joe Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee to oppose Donald Trump, although the party's decision remains uncertain. He urged the party to 'unite' and support Harris as the race for the Democratic nomination enters an unforeseeable phase.
Following President Biden's endorsement of Harris as his potential successor, there is now an imperative for the party to coalesce and direct their attention towards the imminent general election, which is a mere four months away. Given the conclusion of the primaries, the nomination now resides with approximately 4,000 delegates at the forthcoming Democratic National Convention.
In a statement Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged the US Presidents endorsement by saying:
"I am honored to have the President's endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this administration. Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead.
"I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party - and unite our nation - to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.
"We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win."
Vice President Kamala Harris, said on her twitter, "On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination."
Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race and his endorsement of Kamala Harris have injected even more uncertainty into the Democratic Party's quest for the nomination, leaving the remaining candidates to navigate this new reality and adjust swiftly to the changing dynamics of the race.
