Laaulialemalietoa Confirms Rumours of at least ten members from Opposition wanting to run under FAST Banner for 2026 General Elections

In a recent development ahead of the 2026 Samoa General Election, FAST Party Leader Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt has confirmed rumours that a number of candidates from the opposition are considering running under the FAST Party banner. This revelation comes as political activity ramps up across the nation in preparation for the upcoming election.

Schmidt disclosed that more than ten candidates, including new faces from various constituencies, have approached the FAST Party with intentions to run under its banner. While the party is open to welcoming these candidates, Laauli emphasised a cautious approach to avoid repeating the mistakes of the previous administration, its important that we have a strong and good opposition that keep check and balance in a democracy to the ruling party.

"We have a certain number that we want in our Party, to avoid having a one-party state," Laauli stated. "It is important that we uphold democracy."

Laauli's comments reflect the party's commitment to maintaining a balanced political environment, even as it strengthens its position in the lead-up to the 2026 elections. The FAST Party, which currently holds 35 members, is in high spirits and confident about its prospects as the election draws closer.

"We are in good spirits leading to the 2026 General Election," Laauli affirmed. "The 35 members we currently have in our party are a solid foundation for us as we move forward."

In addition to addressing the potential influx of opposition candidates, Schmidt also acknowledged the emergence of new political entities. He confirmed that there are rumours of at least four new parties preparing to contest the upcoming election. Welcoming the competition, Laauli highlighted the importance of democratic participation while also offering a word of caution.

"I encourage them to participate, as it is within their right to do so," Laauli said. "However, I warn them: do not make promises that you can't keep, dont say things just for the sake of saying it, because there are people who talk and there are people who listens, You will need to front up to our people with what you have said."

The FAST Party Leader reiterated his party's dedication to fulfilling the commitments made to the people of Samoa. He expressed confidence that by the end of their term, the FAST Party will have met the targets outlined in their manifesto, solidifying their credibility and trust with the electorate.

As the 2026 General Election approaches, the political landscape in Samoa is becoming increasingly dynamic, with both established and emerging parties gearing up for what promises to be a closely watched contest. The FAST Party, under Laauliʻs leadership, appears to be positioning itself strategically, balancing growth with a firm commitment to democratic principles and accountable governance.
