Laaulialemalietoa Stands Firm in Defence of Prime Minister Amid Media Criticism

Laaulialemalietoa, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, strongly defended Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa against recent criticisms about her absence from regular press conferences. This happened during an interview on Bluwave TV’s podcast Tautai Aʻe, where the minister emphasised the Prime Minister’s commitment and workload.

Prime Minister Fiame had promised more frequent engagement with the media over a month ago, and committed to providing regular updates on government affairs. However, her continued absence from these briefings has raised concerns and questions among the press. Laaulialemalietoa promptly addressed these concerns, highlighting the significant responsibilities and demands on the Prime Minister's time.

"You have to remember, the role of Prime Minister is a hectic role," Laaulialemalietoa asserted. "She has a lot of meetings with other country leaders amongst her other obligations with the caucus. I can only suggest to you, to be patient and keep on knocking on her door."

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries openly acknowledged the vital role of the media in democracy. He emphasised the need for accurate and transparent communication between the government and the public. Additionally, he urged understanding of the heavy workload of the Prime Minister.

"As the media, your role is crucial, especially when it comes to clarification on issues that need accurate and transparent answers," Laaulialemalietoa said. "But there is no limit on asking other ministers questions related to their ministries and their capacities."

The podcast host, Asiata, echoed the media’s responsibility to keep the public informed and to prompt government action when needed. In agreement, Laaulialemalietoa reiterated his availability to the media and his respect for their role, while firmly standing by the Prime Minister’s side.

"I will be available anytime for the media," Laaulialemalietoa promised. "But when it comes to the PM, understand her busy schedule and just keep knocking."

As the media continues to seek regular updates from the government, Laaulialemalietoa’s protective stance calls for patience and understanding, ensuring that the Prime Minister’s dedication to her responsibilities is recognised and respected.
