In an open discussion with the hosts of Sports Talanoa, both of whom are former Manu Samoa players, Coach Schwalger delineated his strategic approach and introduced his team of support coaches, comprising notable former Manu Samoa stars:

  • Tusi Pisi: Renowned ex-fly-half noted for tactical astuteness.

  • Alesana Tuilagi: Esteemed former wing acknowledged for physical prowess and exceptional finishing abilities.

  • Census Johnston: Former prop, offering specialised expertise to fortify the forward pack.

  • Kane Thompson: A versatile figure, adept in the lock/back-row position, whose leadership and wealth of experience are deemed indispensable.

Coach Schwalger highlighted the unique advantages of having these legends on the coaching staff. "They understand the Manu Samoa players' environment, from resources to game day. They've achieved numerous accolades in the international game and know firsthand what it means to be a Manu Samoa player," Schwalger explained.

Aumua To'o Vaega and Toleafoa Andy Aiolupo, in line with Schwalger's vision, emphasised the importance of this locally grown coaching team. Their combined legacy and deep understanding of the cultural and competitive spirit of Samoan rugby are seen as crucial elements for leading the team to success.

Addressing the absence of prominent names such as former All Black Lima Sopoaga, Coach Schwalger pointed out that availability and long-term strategy were the deciding factors. "Lima is 32, so we have to start developing our young players for future games," he said. Schwalger also expressed his intent to give a younger first five-eighth the opportunity to grow and gain experience.

With only a week to assemble the team, Schwalger emphasised the importance of selecting players who are fit and match-ready. This urgency underscores the need for a cohesive and dynamic squad capable of performing under pressure.

When asked by BluTV about the priorities for the upcoming match against a tier-one rugby nation like Italy, Coach Schwalger responded, "I looked at the time frame and focused on that week. The attack and defence, keeping it simple. Given the time frame and the fact that it's our first match, I need players that are match fit, just coming off club season."

Schwalger also emphasised bringing back the old "Samoan style" of play. "The game plan is to play the Samoan style," he said. "The flair Manu Samoa was known for, its physicality in attack and defence, illusive runs during broken play and play the game thats is in front of you."

On the topic of defence, Schwalger is eager to reinstate the powerful hits that were a hallmark of Manu Samoa, referencing legendary player Brian Lima. "With defence, we're trying to bring back those heavy hits like Brian Lima, keep our line speed. Samoa is trying to play the fast game like New Zealand, but we have forgotten the real Samoa play..we don't want adopt other countries strengths; stick to what we're good at and use it to our advantage."

As the nation eagerly awaits the upcoming match against Italy, the combination of seasoned coaching and fresh talent promises an exciting game. Manu Samoa fans are hopeful that this blend of legacy and new leadership will pave the way for a triumphant season.
