Prime Minister Fiame Cools Heated Parliamentary Debate, Former PM Suspended for 24 Hours

A heated parliamentary session saw the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, refusing to comply with the Speaker's orders, resulting in the former Prime Minister's suspension for 24 hours.

Tensions escalated further when Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo, clashed with the Minister of Agriculture, Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Schmidt. The disagreement intensified until the Speaker intervened.

When Parliament resumed after break, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa was present just in time to witness another heated moment from Fa'asalelega No.5 MP, Peseta Vaifou Tevaga, who attempted to address his removal as chairman of his district council office. Laaulialemalietoa clarified that the removal was by his district and not a parliamentary matter, reminding Peseta that the issue was not on the agenda.

Peseta raised his voice in response, prompting Prime Minister Fiame to intervene. She echoed her minister’s point, stating that the issue was not up for parliamentary debate and advising Peseta to focus on the scheduled topics. Peseta then conceded, expressing gratitude to Fiame for her explanation and affectionately telling Laaulialemalietoa, "Laauli, I'm always with you...read my lips...I love you."

The parliamentary session will reconvene tomorrow. It is essential for the integrity of the legislative process that all Members of Parliament are heard, and that discussions are conducted with transparency and clarity.
