Hon. Laaulialemalietoa, Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, along with His Excellency Luamanuvae Albert Mariner, embarked on a visit to the Shenzhen International Fisheries and Seafood Expo in China in 2024.
This visit facilitated discussions between leaders from Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, and representatives from Pacific Island nations. Among the Chinese representatives were key figures such as the General Director of the Bureau of Fisheries from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the General Director of Urban Planning and Natural Resources Bureau from Shenzhen Municipality, and the Deputy General Manager of China National Agriculture Development Group Co. Ltd. These dialogues, held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, were aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and exploring opportunities for collaboration.
The dynamic nature of Samoa's fishing industry necessitates staying abreast of the latest trends and identifying avenues for growth and benefit. The Expo provided valuable insights for Samoa, prompting discussions on the establishment of a fishing port to cater to both local and international fishing vessels, complete with an on-site fish processing facility. Such a port would not only bolster Samoa's fishing sector but also stimulate economic development by attracting ancillary businesses to the area.
