Tensions flared outside TVNZ's Auckland headquarters on October 7, 2024, as Destiny Church members clashed with pro-Palestinian protesters amid rising global anxiety over the Israel-Hamas conflict. The demonstration, involving chants and intense exchanges between the groups, required the presence of around 35 police officers to maintain order.
The rally organised by Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki saw supporters calling for the release of Israeli hostages, with chants of "Free the hostages." On the other side, pro-Palestinian demonstrators demanded an immediate ceasefire, shouting "Ceasefire now" as they highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The protest occurred on the one-year anniversary of Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 Israelis and sparked a prolonged conflict. Police confirmed that one protester was pepper-sprayed, though the overall protest remained relatively peaceful, with no arrests. The demonstration also drew the attention of passersby, many of whom stopped to film the confrontation.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commented earlier in the day, reiterating New Zealand’s call for a ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages, emphasising that peace could only be achieved through diplomacy and negotiation.
This incident is part of a broader wave of protests worldwide, as global divisions over the Middle East conflict continue to deepen.
