Two Seasonal Workers Died believed to be Samoan, Nine Injured in Minibus Crash Near Mildura

Carwarp, Victoria - A devastating accident early this morning has resulted in the deaths of two migrant farm workers and left nine others injured, including two in critical condition, after a minibus crash near Mildura.

Incident Overview

The crash occurred around 7:45 am on the Calder Highway, between Kulkyne Way and Brownport Road, roughly 30 kilometers south of Mildura. Victoria Police reported that the minibus, carrying migrant workers to nearby farms, lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The vehicle then rolled onto its side and slammed into a tree.

Emergency Response

Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, deploying advanced life support and mobile intensive care units to manage the casualties. Tragically, two passengers were declared dead at the scene. The male driver and another critically injured passenger were taken to hospitals for urgent treatment, with one being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Three other passengers sustained serious injuries, while the remaining four were taken to the hospital for observation.

Source Confirmation

A close source to Bluwave TV has confirmed that he has received reports from the police that the two fatalities were Samoan seasonal workers, and another critically injured individual is also from Samoa. Hes awaiting more confirmation and information and provide an update to the families of the victims

Investigation Details

Sergeant Mark McDonald of the Mildura Highway Patrol Unit confirmed the passengers were migrant workers, some from Samoa. He emphasised the severity of the accident, noting the favourable weather and road conditions at the time, which made the cause of the crash puzzling. “We are still investigating the exact circumstances and will be speaking to the passengers and the driver, if his condition allows,” he said.

Road Closures and Community Effect

The Calder Highway remains closed in both directions between Kulkyne Way and Brownport Road and is expected to remain so for several hours. This incident has profoundly impacted the local community, particularly as it involves seasonal workers who play a vital role in the region’s agriculture.

This crash adds to the increasing number of road fatalities in Victoria, with over 130 deaths recorded so far in 2024. The local community and the families of the victims are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
